Orthopaedic Surgery in - Knee Replacement

Hip and knee replacement surgery in Canada along with variety of surgical procedures.Total knee replacement in Canada is associated with greater utilisation rates, less morbidity, less re-admissions. Ongoing studies have shown the biggest increase in knee replacements is actually among younger people with Osteoarthritis being the major cause.

The purpose of this study was to utilise data from the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry (CJRR) to determine trends in the 43,000 total hip and knee replacement surgeries performed annually in Canada. This data will promote improved access to care and evidence based surgical practice. Total knee replacement in Canada is associated with greater utilisation rates, less morbidity, less re-admissions and lower satisfaction compared to total hip arthroplasty.

The Canadian Joint Replacement Surgery Registry is conducted by orthopaedic surgeons under the umbrella of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, funded by Health Canada and administered by the Canadian Institute of Health Information. Inaugurated in 2000, the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry has issued three annual reports, which highlight trends in total hip and knee replacement in Canada over the past decade. Data from this voluntary Registry provide the data for this study.

Partial knee replacement surgery is where they replace one side of the knee joint, usually due to damage caused by arthritis.  Most commonly, it is the inner side of the knee that needs replacing.  It is also known as a unilateral knee replacement or uni knee. Here we will look at what goes on before and during surgery, and what the benefits are of having a partial knee replacement over a total knee replacement.Partial knee replacement surgery is not appropriate for everyone.  You can find out more about the indications for surgery in the PKR overview.

patients require bilateral replacement. However, whether bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) should be staged or simultaneous is hotly debated. To determine the current common operative practices of orthopedic surgeons in Ontario, we carried out a province-wide survey.Orthopedic surgeons from Ontario listed in the 1999 Canadian Medical Directory or the membership list of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association were sent questionnaires, asking about their practice in the timing of bilateral TKA, tourniquet use, type of guide and use of techniques to minimize fat embolization.

Hip and knee replacement surgeries are among the most cost effective medical interventions developed, with the result that a vast majority of patients enjoy a greatly improved quality of life. They are also among the most popular surgeries. You might be surprised to learn that Canada’s yearly 75,000 joint replacements, at an estimated $15 000 each, cost the public health system about $1.125 billion annually – not an insignificant amount.

A wait time is the amount of time you have to wait for your surgery. Your wait is measured from the time your surgeon decides you are a candidate for surgery to the time you have your surgery.
